TL;DR

  • Noem’s mother says Kristi Noem plans to divorce Bryon Noem after 34 years of marriage.
  • No public filing has surfaced, and neither spouse has confirmed divorce proceedings.
  • Earlier reports alleged Bryon Noem paid fetish performers and shared feminine-presenting photos.
  • The controversy has also drawn attention to Kristi Noem’s record on transgender rights.

Kristi Noem is reportedly preparing to end her 34-year marriage to Bryon Noem after allegations emerged about his private online activity, according to the former South Dakota governor’s mother.

Corinne Arnold told the British tabloid The Daily Mail that Noem said in late spring she had hired a lawyer and intended to file for divorce. Arnold said the conversation happened during a birthday party for one of the couple’s grandchildren.

“It has been difficult, but we knew this was coming, that they were going to get divorced,” Arnold said.

The report follows earlier accounts that Bryon Noem paid online fetish performers and shared photos of himself presenting femininely. Those reports have described alleged participation in “bimbofication,” feminization role-play and other fetish activity. The article noted that such behavior is not the same as being transgender.

No public divorce filing has been reported, and neither Kristi Noem nor Bryon Noem has confirmed that proceedings are underway. Bryon Noem has reportedly moved about 20 miles from the couple’s South Dakota ranch. Arnold said she had not seen him for months, though he continues to run his insurance business.

Kristi and Bryon Noem married in 1992 and have three adult children.

The latest reporting comes after the Daily Mail published photographs, messages and claims from online fetish performers who said Bryon Noem paid them to take part in feminization role-play and shared images of himself presenting femininely. Several performers told the outlet that he paid them a combined $25,000 to dominate him online while he wore feminine clothing and used makeshift prosthetic breasts.

In later published messages and recordings, Bryon Noem reportedly asked to be called “Crystal” and discussed fantasies involving hormone therapy, feminizing surgery and eventually living publicly as a woman.

At the same time, the political fallout has centered on Kristi Noem’s public record. As governor of South Dakota and later as homeland security secretary, she supported legislation that restricted transgender people’s lives, including a ban on transgender girls and women participating in female school sports and a ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors.

The contrast has fueled accusations of hypocrisy, especially after Noem’s representatives asked for privacy and said she was “devastated” and the family had been “blindsided” by the disclosures.

The story is developing.

Reports about gender expression and fetish role-play should not be conflated with transgender identity. Cross-dressing is not, by itself, evidence that someone is gay, bisexual or transgender.

That distinction matters because reducing transgender identity to a sexual fetish reinforces harmful stereotypes that have long been used to marginalize transgender women.
