TL;DR

  • 76% of UK adults surveyed support same-sex marriage in YouGov’s latest tracker.
  • Support has increased since the poll began in 2019, when it stood at 45%.
  • Same-sex marriage has been legal across the UK since 2020, following earlier legalisation in Great Britain in 2014.

YouGov’s bimonthly tracker on support for same-sex marriage has recorded 76% approval among UK adults in its latest release, based on data for 29 June.

The survey, which sampled between 1,627 and 3,416 adults living in the UK, found that 51% of respondents said they “strongly support” same-sex marriage and 25% said they “tend to support”.

Opposition was much lower. The poll found 8% “tend to oppose” same-sex marriage, 7% “strongly oppose” it, and 8% said they did not know.

The latest result marks a rise since the tracker first launched in August 2019, when 45% of those surveyed supported same-sex marriage. The share who strongly oppose the idea has also fallen, from 10% in 2019.

Same-sex couples have been legally allowed to marry in the UK since 2014. England and Wales introduced same-sex marriage on 29 March 2014, Scotland followed on 16 December 2014, and Northern Ireland on 13 January 2020.

For LGBTQ+ communities, the figures offer a snapshot of continuing public backing for one of the UK’s most significant equality reforms, even as debates over LGBTQ+ rights continue in other areas.

In the United States, by contrast, Gallup’s June 2026 polling found 65% of those surveyed believed same-sex weddings should be legal, down from 71% in 2022 and 2023.
